As money from the city’s Premier Resort Area Tax begins to come in, Sturgeon Bay Mayor David Ward says he knows one project he wants to tackle with the funds. Ward used a portion of his mayor’s comments Tuesday to address increasing traffic in the city and the danger it presents to pedestrians and cyclists. Ward says that as the city has become more popular with visitors, traffic has increased right along with it. He adds that there are ways to improve pedestrian safety while using PRAT funds for road improvements.
Earlier this month, a 75-year-old Sturgeon Bay woman died after she was struck while crossing the street near the intersection of Third Avenue and Michigan Street. A 73-year-old Sturgeon Bay woman told officers she was waiting to turn left onto Michigan Street from Third Avenue while a group of pedestrians crossed another part of the intersection. After the pedestrians cleared, she began her turn without seeing the 75-year-old woman, who was crossing from west to east in the south crosswalk.
