A 22-year-old Brussels woman was hospitalized and later released with minor injuries Monday following a collision involving her e-bicycle and another vehicle in the city of Sturgeon Bay.

The crash occurred shortly before 8:15 a.m. at the intersection of Michigan Street and Third Avenue. According to a release from the Sturgeon Bay Police Department, a 52-year-old Sturgeon Bay woman was stopped at a stop sign in her vehicle, preparing to make a right-hand turn.

As she began her turn, the Brussels woman entered the intersection from the sidewalk on her e-bicycle as she tried to catch up to another cyclist. She did not stop at the stop sign and rode directly into the path of the vehicle.

Both the e-bicycle and vehicle suffered minor damage as a result of the crash, and the driver of the vehicle was uninjured. The e-cyclist was determined to be at fault, but was not issued a citation.

Sturgeon Bay police officers told DoorCountyDailyNews.com that they used the crash as a teaching moment for the Brussels woman, reminding her that City municipal code does not allow bicycle riding on downtown Sturgeon Bay sidewalks.  State law prohibits bicyclists from leaving a sidewalk and entering the path of an oncoming vehicle.

SBPD said they encouraged the e-cyclist to purchase a bicycle helmet with the money she saved by not receiving a citation.
