If you’re looking for some family-friendly activities to get you into the fall spirit, Crossroads at Big Creek in Sturgeon Bay has a couple of free events planned in October.

As part of Winnie-Pooh-Looza, Crossroads will host a free screening of the two-part documentary series “Secrets of the Bees” at 1:30 p.m. Oct. 5 at the Collins Learning Center.

The documentary, filmed over three years, takes viewers inside the intricate world of a single bee hive while also exploring the more than 20,000 species of bees found around the world.

Crossroads Executive Director Sam Koyen says the film is a natural fit for the celebration.

“This is such an awesome documentary about bees. This is so fitting for Winnie-Pooh-Looza.”

Then, on Oct. 9, you can trade bees for pumpkins during a free pumpkin carving event beginning at 4 p.m. at Crossroads.

Pumpkins grown at the Peninsula Ag Research Station and carving tools will be provided.

“We'll have tons of pumpkins that have been grown out by the Peninsula Ag Research Station,” Koyen said.

The carved pumpkins will help light the trails during Crossroads’ upcoming “Trails and Treats” luminary hike.

“This is in preparation to our lovely, luminary hike later this month,” Koyen said.

Both events are free and open to the public. Space for the pumpkin carving event is limited, so an RSVP is requested.
