A 16-year-old Sturgeon Bay teen was taken to a Green Bay hospital last week following a single-vehicle rollover crash in the Town of Nasewaupee.
The Door County Sheriff’s Department was notified of the crash shortly after 7:45 p.m. and responded to Idlewild Road near Feest Road roughly 15 minutes later. When deputies arrived, they learned the teen had been ejected through a side window after his vehicle left the roadway, entered a ditch and rolled over.
The teen was sitting in a friend’s vehicle when the deputy arrived and had lacerations to his face and the back of his head.
The responding deputy found deep tire marks in the gravel indicating the teen had lost control of the vehicle and was unable to correct it as the vehicle began to spin before the crash. One of the tires broke off at the hub assembly and separated from the vehicle as it rolled in the ditch before coming to rest.
The teen told the deputy he had been driving the speed limit when he swerved to avoid an oncoming deer.
He was cited for failure to notify police of a crash, failure to keep a vehicle under control, driving too fast for conditions, operating left of center, operating a motor vehicle without an adequate muffler, driving on tires with less than 2/32-inch tread, not wearing a seat belt, equipping a non-police vehicle with blue lights, and traveling at an unreasonable and imprudent speed.
Idlewild Road reopened at approximately 8:30 p.m. after the vehicle was towed and the scene was cleared.
