Door County Trails goes on tour with strategic master plan

Category: Local News

After receiving feedback from more than 1,100 Door County community members, the future of how you travel through the area is beginning to come into focus.

Door County Trails began visiting the county’s 19 municipalities late last month to share its vision for creating a countywide network of safe, multiuse pedestrian and bicycle trails.

“This planning effort is creating a tool for Door County municipalities to use as they consider future trail development,” said Door County Trails Executive Director Julie Schmelzer. “By highlighting areas where trail connections are desired, the plan provides municipalities with a starting point for evaluating potential trail corridors and conducting detailed trail planning.”

The organization worked with KL Engineering, Stantec and Chastain & Associates to develop the strategic plan, with the presentations providing municipalities with ideas on how to proceed.

“We’re providing a roadmap for municipalities to work together,” Schmelzer said. “We can provide grant assistance and coordinate with municipalities throughout the design and implementation phases to ensure connectivity and continuity across the countywide network.”

For example, Door County Trails helped the town of Gibraltar secure $4.7 million in grant funding from the Wisconsin Department of Transportation to connect Fish Creek and Ephraim via a multiuse pedestrian and bicycle trail.

The group presented its plan to the Sturgeon Bay Common Council last week, with additional meetings scheduled in the coming weeks.
