Health care officials want to help you decide where to go when you are not feeling well.
According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, excessive use of emergency departments is the fourth-largest source of financial waste annually at $38 billion, in addition to contributing to long waits, doctor burnout, and other concerns.
It is not always the patient’s fault, either. Emergency departments can offer peace of mind about a medical concern without having to wait for an office to open, even if the visit comes at an additional cost.
Dr. Eric Adar is the Medical Director of the Emergency Department at Door County Medical Center, and he recommends talking to someone at the hospital first because they could direct you in a direction that can better assist you and get you seen faster.
Adar says DirectCare should be reserved for common complaints like congestion, earaches, and other issues that may not require an X-Ray or a blood test. You can listen to Adar's explanation of the types of issues each facility can address below.
