Be wary of dry conditions when burning

Category: Local News

Dry grasses and windy conditions helped spread a small fire in the Town of Gardner on Saturday, after a property owner’s lighting off of some old flares got out of his control.

Brussels-Union-Gardner Fire Department Assistant Fire Chief Jim Wautier said the damage was minimal, and contained to about a 100 by 300 foot area.

In other fire calls over the weekend, the Sturgeon Bay Fire Department responded to a call at the Bayside Cemetery Friday evening. A pile of leaves was still smoldering from an earlier burning.

The Egg Harbor Fire Department responded to the HTR Door County Campground and RV Resort, for what Fire Chief Justin MacDonald referred to as a “tree branch on a wire” that sparked. No fire suppression was necessary.

As fall settles in, leaves drop and the winds change, Wautier warned anyone burning outdoors  -  even in contained fire pits - to be diligent.
