E-bike safety program coming to Sturgeon Bay schools

Category: Local News

Over the past several months, the City of Sturgeon Bay's Local Transportation Board spent considerable time discussing e-bike safety and how young riders could be better educated about safely navigating streets and sidewalks.

As a proactive response, Sturgeon Bay Police Department School Resource Officer Derek Jennerjohn is developing an e-bike safety education program in partnership with the Sturgeon Bay School District.

The program is scheduled for launch this coming Spring, and will focus on students in grades 3–6 at Sunrise Elementary and T.J. Walker Middle School.

Something like a hands-on, bike rodeo will be part of the program for Sunrise Elementary students, providing an opportunity to practice important bicycle safety skills.

In a social media post Wednesday, Alderman Spencer Gustafson wrote that educating kids about e-bike safety has been a priority for him, as he serves on the Local Transportation Board.

"While rules and regulations certainly have their place, I believe teaching our younger generations how to ride responsibly, understand traffic laws, and recognize potential hazards is equally important," Gustafson wrote.
