A 21-year-old Sturgeon Bay man was airlifted to Door County Medical Center after his manure truck overturned in the town of Forestville on Tuesday.
The crash occurred around 5:30 p.m. at the intersection of County Highway D and Forest Drive. According to the crash report, the man was attempting to turn onto County D from Forest Drive when his truck overturned into a ditch.
The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources was notified after manure began leaking from the truck. According to DNR Northeast Region Spill Coordinator and Hydrogeologist Cody Heinze, an estimated 5,000 gallons of manure spilled into the roadside ditch. The spill was contained by constructing berms in the ditch, and the manure was recovered using a vacuum truck.
As a result of the cleanup efforts, no impacts to nearby wetlands or waterways are anticipated.
The driver was taken to the hospital with suspected minor injuries. He was cited for failure to keep his vehicle under control and failure to wear a seat belt.
