Auxiliary aims to raise $100,000 for future medical professionals

You can play an important role in helping area hospitals maintain the staffing they need to care for their communities.

According to the American Association of Colleges of Nursing, the United States is facing a projected shortage of more than 267,000 full-time registered nurses by 2028, while the Association of American Medical Colleges projects a shortage of up to 86,000 physicians by 2036.

The shortages are especially concerning in rural areas, which is why the Door County Medical Center Auxiliary is working to keep the pipeline of young medical professionals flowing to the peninsula through its Angel Scholarship Campaign.

Last year, the organization raised more than $122,000 to help students and health care workers in Door County begin or further their education in the field. The funding helped the auxiliary award a record number of scholarships covering fields such as pharmacology, nutritional studies, diagnostic imaging, biomedical engineering, physical therapy, occupational therapy, psychology, nursing, physician assistant studies and premedical studies.

David Resch of the Door County Medical Center Auxiliary says he has met several scholarship recipients over the years and is proud of the impact the program has had on their lives and the community they serve.

Door County Medical Center physician assistant Mollie Petersen credits the scholarship she received from the auxiliary with helping launch her health care career.

“The generosity of the donors to the Door County Medical Center Auxiliary helped me attend Marquette University to become a physician’s assistant,” Petersen said. “I have been practicing at Door County Medical Center since 2011 and I can’t imagine a career more fulfilling.”

Door County and Algoma high school graduates pursuing health care careers, previous graduates enrolled in health care-related programs, and Door County Medical Center employees continuing their health care education are eligible for the scholarships.

The Door County Medical Center Auxiliary has raised $35,000 toward its $100,000 goal for the Angel Scholarship Campaign.
