DNR reminds archery hunters to prioritize safety as deer rut begins

As deer activity picks up with cooler temperatures and the approaching rut, the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources is reminding hunters not to overlook basic safety precautions.

DNR Conservation Warden Chris Kratcha says the final week of October and first week of November typically bring increased activity during the archery deer hunting season as temperatures drop and the breeding season begins.

Kratcha says the excitement of heading into the woods should not come at the expense of safety, especially for hunters using elevated tree stands.

According to Bowhunting.com, falls from tree stands are a leading cause of serious and fatal hunting injuries in the United States.

As of Oct. 20, hunters in Door and Kewaunee counties had harvested approximately 800 deer, including 346 antlered deer.
