USS Silversides prepares for return trip to Michigan

Your commute across Sturgeon Bay's downtown bridges could be interrupted in the coming days by a World War II submarine.

The USS Silversides Museum announced this week that the USS Silversides could begin its journey back to its home dock in Muskegon, Michigan, as early as Thursday. However, its departure could be delayed until Nov. 4 if weather conditions do not cooperate.

The historic World War II submarine made the 113-mile journey to Fincantieri Bay Shipbuilding in Sturgeon Bay in July, marking its first open-water trip since 1987. Shortly after its arrival, the submarine began undergoing a $3.5 million restoration to help preserve it as a maritime attraction for decades to come.

USS Silversides Museum staff showcased some of the improvements on social media as part of the submarine's homecoming announcement.

Before becoming part of the USS Silversides Museum, the submarine sank 23 Japanese ships, destroyed 16 sea mines and rescued two downed pilots during its World War II service.

The departure of the USS Silversides will make room at Fincantieri Bay Shipbuilding for the winter fleet, which is expected to begin arriving in the coming weeks.

Last year, Manitowoc's USS Cobia underwent similar dry-dock repairs at Fincantieri Bay Shipbuilding.

You can follow the USS Silversides Museum on Facebook for the latest updates on the submarine's departure.
