While commemorations were held last month, the Belgian Heritage Center will take its remembrance of the Great Peshtigo Fire of 1871 one step further this weekend when it hosts “Beyond Survival: The True Cost of the Fires of 1871.” The fire burned for about a day but killed between 1,200 and 2,500 people and destroyed approximately 1.2 million acres, including swaths of land in Door and Kewaunee counties. Guests will learn more about those affected by the fire through biographical cards they will receive. Capt. David Siegel, author Susan D. Levitte and historian Barb Englebert Chisholm will also participate in a panel discussion sharing stories of the communities that had to rise from the ashes. Sandy Orsted of the Belgian Heritage Center says interest in the Great Peshtigo Fire never seems to fade.
The event will take place Nov. 7 from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Belgian Heritage Center in Brussels. Admission is free, but donations are welcome.
