An 83-year-old Liberty Grove man is scheduled to return to court Dec. 17 following a hearing last week regarding his competency to stand trial.
Richard C. Engberg was ordered to undergo a competency evaluation in September following his arrest in connection with the death of a 79-year-old woman under his care. According to WLUK-TV, the woman was found lying on the ground near the front porch of a residence with open sores on her body after Engberg allegedly left her outside for more than a week. She was taken to a hospital, where she later died.
During last week's hearing, Engberg's defense attorney, Shannon Viel, challenged the findings of the competency report. With no objection from the state, the defense was given 45 days to find its own examiner ahead of a status conference in December.
Engberg has been held in the Door County Jail since Sept. 10, shortly after the woman was found.
