A refrigerator out in the open in Sturgeon Bay is providing hope for community members who go to bed without enough food. Door County Mutual Aid recently plugged in the Full Hearts Fridge in front of The Pearl of Door County on Third Avenue in Sturgeon Bay. The blue outpost offers standard nonperishable items, while the refrigerator is stocked with other food, including surplus food from area restaurants.
Door County Mutual Aid's Ryan Shaw says the area's food pantries do amazing work, but they aren't always accessible to community members who cannot stop by during regular hours. He hopes the Full Hearts Fridge serves as more than a place where people can grab necessities they do not have or cannot afford.
Shaw adds that a group of volunteers will help keep the Full Hearts Fridge stocked and clean. Community members are welcome to donate items directly to the fridge, though donations of raw meat, eggs, medication and alcohol are discouraged.
