James L. Kerscher

James L. Kerscher, Sr., 86 years, of Valmy, died suddenly, December 23, 2021 at his home after suffering an apparent heart attack following a lengthy illness. 

     He was born August 4, 1935, in Sturgeon Bay, son of the late Lawrence and Loretta (Zettel) Kerscher. Jim graduated from Sturgeon Bay High School in 1954.  He served his country in the U.S. Army. On May 17, 1958, he married Carol Ann Stoeger at SS Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Institute. Carrying on the family tradition of grocer, he and his father owned and operated Kerschers’ Foodland where his butchering and smoking skills were 2nd to none. Skills that were learned from his parents at their grocery store business on Jefferson Street in Sturgeon Bay.

     Jim was a member of SS Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, and Holy Name Society. He enjoyed playing golf with Carol at Cherry Hills and worked there cutting lawn for years in his retirement. At work and at home, Jim was always smiling, singing and whistling. He loved woodworking, spending time at the cottage, and fishing; everything revolved around being with his family and friends.   

     Surviving family include his wife, Carol; four sons, Ron (Paula) of Plymouth, Jim (MaryChris) of Appleton, Terry (Tina) of Suamico, and Tom (Lynley) of Temecula, CA; ten grandchildren, Emily (Paul) Meyer, Christopher (fiancé, Michelle) Kerscher, Megan (Justin) Walsh, Taylor (Kyleigh) Kerscher, Nicholas (fiancé, Ashton) Kerscher, Daniel Kerscher, Aliece Kerscher, Brooke Kerscher, and twins, Griffin and Abbey Kerscher; three great-grandchildren, Finnley, Braxton, Geneva; and two siblings, Pat Gordon and Larry (Cindy) Kerscher.

     A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, December 30, 2021 at SS Peter and Paul Catholic Church with Fr. Bob Stegmann officiating.  Burial will follow in the church cemetery. 

     Friends may call from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. Wednesday evening at Huehns Funeral Home and at the church Thursday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service at 11:00 a.m. A parish wake will be prayed at 6:45 p.m. Wednesday at Huehns Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorial funds have been established in memory of Jim at SS Peter and Paul Catholic Church and Sunshine House in Sturgeon Bay.

     Jim’s family wishes to extend a heartfelt thank you to Dr. Richard Hogan at Door County Medical Center.
