Carl Arthur Herlache, 86, of Sturgeon Bay, was called Home to be with the Lord, Monday evening, December 27, 2021 at Bellin Hospital in Green Bay.
He was born February 3, 1935 in Sturgeon Bay, the son of Carl Lionel Herlache and Edna T. (Stoeger) Herlache. Carl grew up attending St. Joseph Parish in Sturgeon Bay and eventually Sturgeon Bay Moravian Church. Anticipating he would serve his country in the military, Carl enlisted in the United States Naval Reserves during his junior year at Sturgeon Bay High School in 1952. He graduated from SBHS in 1954 and remained with the Naval Reserves until entering into active duty with the Navy on June 19, 1957. Carl was stationed on the USS Vogelgesang (DD 813). He was honorably discharged from the Navy on June 13, 1959 and remained on Reserve status until March 31, 1961.
Upon his discharge, Carl returned home to Sturgeon Bay. He met Mary Sylvia Neinas at (the former) Coyer’s (tavern) in Idlewild in August of 1959. They were engaged in December that year and then united in marriage on April 30, 1960 at Mary’s home church of St. Peter’s Ev. Lutheran Church in Sturgeon Bay where remained Carl remained a member throughout his life.
He initially worked for Amity Leather Co. in Sturgeon Bay eleven years where Mary also worked. Mary was a sewer, and Carl was a cutter. He then went to work for Milwaukee Shoe downtown Sturgeon Bay for two years. Carl was patrol officer for the Sturgeon Bay Police Department for a few years. He attended Northeastern Wisconsin Technical College in Sturgeon Bay to study blueprint reading and pipefitting prior to going to work for Palmer Johnson Yachts as a pipefitter for thirty-four years. When Carl “retired”, he spent time patrolling Maxwelton Braes Golf Course in Baileys Harbor as a (course) ranger and playing golf when he could.
As a veteran, Carl was a member of the Weber-Tess AMVETS Post 51 in Sturgeon Bay. He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed fishing on the water (anywhere) and deer hunting with ten other friends who would make the annual trip up north to the hunting shack in Cedar in Iron County. Carl also liked to go camping in South Dakota. He bowled in league at Cherry Lanes and then Apple Valley Lanes, both in Sturgeon Bay. Carl loved his schnauzer, “Penny”, which was also the name of his first daughter, and so Penny (the dog) became known as “Penny Girl”, just to make it clear which Penny he was conversing with.
Carl will be missed by his wife, Mary, with whom he was blessed with over 61 years of marriage; two daughters, Penny (Maynard) Gunnlaugsson and LuAnn Poh, both of Sturgeon Bay; ten grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; siblings-in-law, Darell Gill of Lyndon Station, Clarice Ripp, Donald (Elaine) Neinas, both of Sturgeon Bay, and Elton Neinas of Haines City, FL; other relatives; longtime friend, John Park; and other good friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Kevin (2018); great-granddaughter; former son-in-law, Torry Lautenbach; sister, Sharon Gill; siblings-in-law, Lorene (John) Moore, Marilyn (Norman) Voeks, Elmer Neinas, Audrey Neinas, and (infant) Gladys Neinas.
A funeral service will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Monday, January 3, 2022 at Huehns Funeral Home in Sturgeon Bay with Pastor Joel Sauer, of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Sturgeon Bay, officiating. Military honors by the United States Navy and the AMVETS Weber-Tess Post 51 will follow at the funeral home. Carl will be laid to rest in Bayside Cemetery in the Town of Sevastopol.
Visitation for family and friends will be held at Huehns Funeral Home on Monday from 1:00 p.m. until 2:15 p.m.
