Raymond Kostiuk

Raymond Kostiuk, 94, of the Town of Gibraltar, was called Home to be with the Lord, Friday evening, September 16, 2022 at Good Samaritan Society-Scandia Village in Sister Bay.

He was born April 6, 1928 in Hazleton, PA, the son of Onufrey and Rozalia (Strack) Kostiuk. Ray attended St.Basil Preparatory School in Stamford, CT. Ray graduated from Catholic University in Washington, D.C. and then DePaul University in Chicago, IL where he received his Master degree in counseling.

He was initially employed as a guidance counselor at Barrington High School in Illinois and eventually became a counselor for the middle school as well. Ray also taught ethics at Triton College in River Grove, IL.

He and Sylvia Ann Bublinec were united in marriage on June 7, 1969 at St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Cathedral in Chicago and resided in the Chicago area until moving to Oakwood Hills, IL.  Upon retiring, Ray and Sylvia settled in the Town of Gibraltar in Door County, WI.

While living in Door County, Ray substitute taught at Sevastopol School in Institute and St. Joseph and Corpus Christi Catholic Schools in Sturgeon Bay. Many Door County community members still remember having “Mr. Kostiuk” as a substitute teacher. Ray was a member of St. Paul Parish in Fish Creek (now Stella Maris Parish-Fish Creek site) and assisted with parishioner visits at their homes. He was member of Coast Guard Auxiliary in Sturgeon Bay and was proud to have helped high school students enroll and gain acceptance into Coast Guard Academy.

Ray enjoyed model ship building, reading, and traveling. His love for traveling took him halfway around the world mostly enjoying riverboat cruises.

Ray will be deeply missed by his wife, Sylvia; two siblings, Rosemary (George) Matusick of Drums, PA and Gerald Kostiuk of New Windsor, NY; other relatives; and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; five siblings, Helen (George) Letchko, Catherine (Warren) Gius, Magdelin (Tony) Figuredo, Anna Volk, and Mary (John) Walchonski; and other relatives.

Ray’s life will be honored with a Mass of Christian Burial celebrated at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, September 28, 2022 at Stella Maris Parish-Fish Creek site, 4012 State Highway 42, with Fr. Thomas Farrell as celebrant. He will be laid to rest in St. John the Baptist Cemetery in the Town of Egg Harbor.

Visitation for family at friends will be held at Stella Maris Parish-Fish Creek site on Wednesday, September 28, 2022 from 9:30 a.m. until 10:45 a.m.

Memorials may be given in Ray’s name for the Wisconsin Humane Society-Door County Campus (3475 Park Drive, Sturgeon Bay, WI 54235; 920-746-1111) OR Stella Maris Parish (P.O. Box 49, Egg Harbor, WI 54209; 920-868-3241).

The family would like to thank the nurses and staff at Scandia Village, Unity Hospice, and Tom O’Grady, Becky Nash, and Father Thomas Farrell from Stella Maris Parish for their kind attention to Ray during his illness.

Huehns Funeral Home in Sturgeon Bay is assisting the Kostiuk family with arrangements. Expressions of sympathy, memories, and photos of Ray may be shared with his family through his tribute page at www.huehnsfuneralhome.com.
