Ethel (Iwen) Zimmerman

Ethel (Iwen) Zimmerman, 88, Algoma, passed away Tuesday, November 29, 2022 at the Skilled Nursing Facility in Sturgeon Bay.  She was born July 25, 1934 in Algoma to Henry and Viola (Haucke) Iwen.  

 

Ethel graduated from the Algoma  High School in 1952.  She then graduated from the Door-Kewaunee Teacher College in 1954 and continued her Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education from U.W. Oshkosh.

 

Her teaching career began in the one room rural school system - when consolidation occurred continued in the public school system in Algoma.
Ethel married Harvey Zimmerman Jr., June 10, 1961, in Kewaunee.  Together they shared 30 years of marriage and raised their three children, Tod, Ron and Jodi.  She continued to teach in the Algoma Unified School District for a total of 34 years, before retiring in 1994.

 

In her retirement years she enjoyed special times with family and good friends.  Ethel enjoyed many activities, including reading, gardening, sewing, traveling, theater, music, painting, church groups, homemaker group, taking classes of interests, crafts, trying to new recipes and volunteering.

 

Ethel is survived by her three children, Tod (Toni), Ron, and Jodi (Joel) Jeanquart; two grandchildren; sister Karen (Ted) Goetzel; sister-in-law Carol Iwen; many special nieces and nephews.   She was preceded in death by her husband Harvey on March 29, 1992, brother Ronald, brothers-in law and sisters-in-law, Jerome Zimmerman, Germaine (Donald) Entringer, Herbert (Donna) Zimmerman, Myra (Norman) Michaletz and LeVerle (Paul) Koenig, nephews Mark Entringer, Duane Iwen and Jarret Goetzel; niece Stephanie Koenig.

 

Family and friends are invited to a public visitation on Monday December 5, 2022 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Algoma, from 9:00 AM until time of services at 12:00 PM. with Rev John Moll and Rev. Joel McKenney officiating.  Burial in the Evergreen Cemetery.

 

The family wants to thank the staff at Door County Medical Center-Skilled Nursing Facility for your professional care; Unity Hospice-especially Heather, Jenny and Sierra for your compassion and dedication; Pastor McKenney and Pastor Moll for your spiritual guidance and Laurie Schinderle for your kindness and support during this difficult time.

 

The family would also like to thank all of mom's friends and relatives that brought food, sent an email, called to chat, mailed a card, or dropped by for a visit.  It meant the world to her and was very much appreciated.

 

The Schinderle Funeral Home was entrusted with the arrangements for Ethel and her family.
