Doris E. Loss

Doris E. Loss, 82 years of Sturgeon Bay, passed away peacefully Monday, April 17, 2023.

She was born June 16, 1940 in Hammond, Indiana, the daughter of the late Gerhart and Margaret (Dockweiler) Rosenau.  Doris graduated from Hammond High School in 1958 before attending Indiana University, receiving her undergrad degree in 1962. Doris was proud to have received her degree in education and to be the first in her family to complete her college degree at a time when few women pursued higher education. She pursued her graduate work at UW Parkside. Doris taught elementary school at Hammond School District for seven years, Racine Unified School for 24 years where she impacted hundreds of students’ lives. Not only did she impact her students, but the teachers and administrators with whom she worked serving as Union Rep and serving on the school board of Lutheran High School in Racine. Doris was a building mediator and building rep in Racine.

On August 22, 1964 she married Robert Alan Loss at Trinity Lutheran Church in Hammond. They moved full time to Door County in 2006. Doris always loved children and teaching. After moving to Door County, she continued that passion as a substitute teacher at Sturgeon Bay Schools and Southern Door Schools.

Doris was a member of Shepherd of the Bay Lutheran Church in Ellison Bay. She was a member of Altrusa, the Wisconsin Retired Teachers Association (WREA). She received a Paul Harris Fellow from Rotary. She enjoyed playing organ, was a passionate Brewers fan, enjoyed traveling with Bob throughout the United States visiting National Parks, and to Spring Training in Arizona.

Surviving family include her husband, Bob of Sturgeon Bay; she was dear mother to her two sons, William (Melissa) Loss of Beaver Dam, and Jonathan Loss of Sturgeon Bay; grandchildren, Madeline, Ian, Donovan, Bella and Elsa; her sister, Dorothy (Rev. Paul) Kritsch of Sharps Chapel, Tennessee; cousins, Rita Carlson of Indiana, David Rosenau of Florida; many nieces and nephews.

Preceding her in death were her parents; brother, Gordon Rosenau.; and niece, National Park Ranger, Margaret Anderson.

Funeral Services will be held at Shepherd of the Bay Lutheran Church in Ellison Bay on Friday, April 28, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Jim Honig officiating.

Friends may call at Huehns Funeral Home, in Sturgeon Bay, Thursday, April 27, 2023 from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Visitation will continue at the church on Friday beginning at 9:30 a.m. until the time of service at 11:00 a.m.

Despite family tragedies, losing her brother and nephew and niece much too early in their lives, she found joy being with children as their teacher. She loved bird watching and was an avid Brewers fan. We are so sad to lose our mother and a loving companion, wife, to our dad, but are comforted having had her in our lives and for the first time in 23 years, she is free from pain, and in Christ, she is made whole again.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed in her memory to Door County Maritime Museum or Altrusa Club of Door County.

Huehns Funeral Home is assisting the Loss family with arrangements. Expressions of sympathy, memories, and photos of Doris may be shared with her family through her tribute page at www.huehnsfuneralhome.com.
