Laurel Ann Wessel

Laurel Ann Wessel, 78, of Sturgeon Bay, passed away peacefully on June 9, 2026, at the Pete and Jelaine Horton Center Skilled Nursing Center. Laurel was born in Algoma, Wisconsin, to the late Clarence and Edna Wessel. She grew up on the family farm alongside her brothers, where there was never a shortage of work to be done. Those early years instilled in her a strong work ethic and appreciation for family, and she often shared fond memories of life on the farm and the experiences that shaped her. Family was at the center of Laurel's life. She is lovingly remembered by her daughter, Tammy Sternard (ReNee); her grandchildren, Tyler Wallace, Brady Tooley, Shaun Tooley, Abi Tooley (Michael); daughter-in-law Heidi Weckler; and her granddaughters, Hayleigh Vannieuwenhoven and Emma Weckler. She also leaves behind her brothers, Richard Wessel (Geri) and David Wessel, along with numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends who will cherish her memory. Laurel was preceded in death by her son, Wade Weckler; her parents, Clarence and Edna Wessel; and her brothers, Donald Wessel and Robert Wessel. Throughout her life, Laurel dedicated herself to caring for others. She worked for many years as a caregiver and spent a significant portion of her career in the service industry, where her hardworking nature and friendly spirit touched the lives of many. Her compassion and willingness to help others left a lasting impression on everyone she met. Known for her caring heart, feisty attitude, and genuine love of life, Laurel embraced each day with resilience, humor, and determination. She took great pride in her family and created lasting memories with those she loved. Her kindness, strength, and spirited nature will be deeply missed but forever remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing her. The family extends a heartfelt thank you to the staff of Unity Hospice, especially Angie, Katie, Laura, Wendy, and Patty, whose visits brought Laurel comfort and companionship. Their compassionate care, kindness, and unwavering support over the past year and a half meant more than words can express and will never be forgotten. The family would also like to express their deepest appreciation to Nurse Practitioner Allison Rutten for the exceptional care, compassion, and dedication she provided to Laurel throughout her journey. Her professionalism, kindness, and genuine concern brought comfort not only to Laurel but also to her family, and her support will always be remembered with heartfelt gratitude. The family would also like to express their sincere gratitude to the staff at DCMC Skilled Nursing. Although Mom was only there for a short time, everyone welcomed her with kindness and treated both her and our family with exceptional compassion and respect. Knowing she was in such caring and capable hands during her final days is a gift for which we will be forever grateful and one that is beyond words. As much as we all will miss her, there is some comfort knowing she is finally at peace. We are sure she's already up there dancing away to some of her favorite Elvis music. She always encouraged those around her to live life with no regrets, and in the end, she was proud to say, "I did it my way." Those words perfectly reflected how she lived her life on her own terms, with courage, determination, and an unforgettable spirit. She certainly did it her way. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be directed to DCMC Skilled Nursing Center to help create a raised flower garden in Laurel's honor. It is our hope that this garden will provide a place of beauty, comfort, and reflection for residents, families, and staff for years to come. The family has chosen to hold a private burial. A celebration of Laurel's life will be held at a later date, with details to be announced in the future. Huehns Funeral Home, Inc. & Door County Crematory LLC of Sturgeon Bay are assisting the family. Expressions of sympathy, memories, and photos of Laurel may be shared with her family through her tribute page at www.huehnsfuneralhome.com.
