Christine (Haberli) Goettelman

Christine (Haberli) Goettelman, known lovingly by many as Gowa, Baba bee, or Chriss, passed away on June 13, 2026, at the age of 74. Born on September 26, 1951, to Leo and Eleanor (Bailey) Haberli in Sturgeon Bay, Christine lived her life rooted in the community she called home, leaving it richer and warmer than she found it. A 1969 graduate of Sturgeon Bay High School, Christine went on to Northeast Wisconsin Technical College, graduating from the Medical Assistant program in 1970. On August 8, 1970, she (an east sider) married her high school sweetheart, David "Dirk" Goettelman (a west sider) at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Sturgeon Bay. Christine was, above all else, great fun. Everyone who met her loved her. She was always upbeat and had a sense of humor that could get the whole room rolling. Beneath the laughter, however, was a woman of deep conviction who believed in kindness, generosity, and standing up for the underdog. She was the life of the party, which, in her words, became a slippery slope. One of her greatest accomplishments was achieving 25 years of sobriety. She never took her recovery for granted, and she helped many people along the way, trudging the road to happy destiny. She was a huge music fan who encouraged that love in her kids, and she had a particular fondness for cars, especially her MG. She was a voracious reader, avid gardener, and intrepid traveler, often booking through Margi's Misadventure No Pride Tours. Christine volunteered quietly and generously for multiple causes. The full extent of her giving may never be known, because she was never one to talk about it. Christine loved animals deeply - there were always multiple pets underfoot in her home, and she always had a stash of treats at the ready for her grand pups. Over the years, Christine kept busy working for several doctors' offices and served as innkeeper at The Barbican Inn. She supported Dirk with his ventures, especially CarQuest Auto Parts. She was the engine under the hood of CarQuest; without her, it simply wouldn't have run. Later in life, never one to sit still, she was the general contractor of their beloved lake house; Christine had style and knew exactly what she wanted. She was a loving daughter, sister, and friend. But the role she cherished most was being Mom, Gowa, and Baba bee. She mothered several of the neighborhood kids (and even a few adults). It didn't matter to her who her kids dragged home; she would just shake her head. Everyone was always welcome. Those wearing combat boots, though, had to crawl across the pink carpet. Through it all, she always reminded those around her to be kind to everyone, but to look out for the "Eddie Haskells." She is survived by her husband of 55 years, Dirk Goettelman; her sons, Adam (Caitlin) Goettelman and Elliot Goettelman; her beloved grandchildren, Emmet, Jasper, Calvin, Oliver, and Luella Goettelman; the mothers of her grandchildren, Meghan Farley, Kelly Avenson, and Kayla Bissen; her brothers, Eric (Yvonne) Haberli of Jensen Beach, Florida, and Joel (Nina) Haberli of Cos Cob, Connecticut; her sister, Margi (Dave) Kvitek of Ledgeview, Wisconsin; her sisters-in-law, Cindy and Vicky Goettelman; and many nieces, nephews, and friends who adored her. She was preceded in death by her mother, father, stepfather Fred Serrahn, brothers-in-law John and Bill Goettelman, and many beloved pets. Christine Goettelman made every room brighter and every life she touched a little better. She will be deeply missed. A visitation and celebration of life will be held on July 14th from 4:00 pm - 7:00 pm at the Door County Granary in Sturgeon Bay. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be directed to the 115 Club, HELP of Door County, and Wisconsin Humane Society-Door County Campus in Christine's honor. Huehns Funeral Home, Inc. & Door County Crematory LLC in Sturgeon Bay are caring for Christine and her family. Expressions of sympathy, memories, and photos of Christine may be shared with her family through her tribute page at www.HuehnsFuneralHome.com.
