Justin Michael Skiba

Categories: Obituaries

Justin Michael Skiba, 40, of Sturgeon Bay, passed away Saturday morning, October 31, 2026. He was born August 8, 1986 in Neenah, one of ten children born to David Patrick Skiba, Sr. and Wendolyn "Wendy" Elizabeth (Schuh) Skiba. Justin grew up in Seymour and attended Rock Ledge Elementary School. He played football and golf for Seymour High School and graduated with the class of 2004. Justin always wanted to be a teacher. He went on to study at UW - Fox Valley in Menasha before transferring to the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay where he earned his Bachelor's degree in 2009. Justin continued playing football for the (semi-pro) Green Bay Gladiators football team. He was their quarterback from 2007 until 2012. Justin worked at Sam's Club in Appleton while attending college. It was there he met Stephanie Gail Valdez who was picking up a birthday cake from the store. Justin kept in touch with her after that first meeting. They were married September 20, 2009 at the White Lace Inn in Sturgeon Bay. Justin started with Sevastopol School on August 18, 2009 and taught third grade. He eventually traded in his (football) pads and helmet for a whistle and headset as he coached JV and eventually became the head (varsity) football coach (2009-2015). Justin headed the committee that helped the school convert from traditional 11-man football to 8-man. When he wasn't coaching football, he could still be found playing quarterback and eventually reffing football during recess. Justin was one of the star players for the annual staff vs. students football and basketball games each year. Wisconsin Public Television recognized Justin in a letter, reviewing his collaborative efforts with six other educators for writing lesson plans for the Wisconsin Hometown Stories Project. Justin LOVED his Sevastopol family - his colleague teachers and friends as well as students he taught and coached. Those at Sevastopol remember him for being "an incredibly kind-hearted teacher who had the gift to connect with his students" and that "he made the kids [at Sevastopol] feel seen whether they were in his class or not." "His contagious laugh could be heard in the halls." "He poured his heart into the Living Wax Museum each year, sharing his love for history with the students and helping that [history] come to life." "His kindness, sense of humor, compassion, and genuine care for others made a lasting impact on the students, colleagues, friends, and the entire Sevastopol community." "Justin's influence on the students and the school community will not be forgotten." He enjoyed playing golf recreationally and eventually started running - in various 5K races over the years. Justin volunteered with the Heritage Village at Big Creek and cherished the time he spent teaching as "Justin the Journeyman" alongside Mike Madden and Coggin Heeringa. He liked traveling with family, even to Europe, but Walt Disney World (in Florida) was definitely his favorite place to visit. In recent years, Justin enjoyed building his dream cabin on his property, just outside of the city limits of Sturgeon Bay, in the Town of Nasewaupee.

Justin LOVED his family: wife, Stephanie; daughters, Delaney and Amelia; parents, David and Wendy Skiba of Seymour; siblings, Sarah (Jake) Newling of the Town of Osborn; Pam (Andy) Gorecki of Black Creek, David (Sarah) Skiba of Seymour, Steve (Jodell Gagnow) Skiba of Seymour, Zak (Tiffany) Skiba of Mequon, Alyssa (Brad) Beno of Neenah, Molly (Eric) Kropp of Thiensville, Abby (Dan) Schlenz of Greenville, and Jordan Skiba of Seymour; aunts and uncles; many nieces and nephews; other relatives; and friends. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Reynold "Ray" and Irene (nee Wisinski) Skiba and maternal grandparents, John and Alice (nee Dorn) Schuh; uncles, Jeffery Skiba and Patrick Schuh; and other relatives.

A memorial service will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Monday, November 9, 2026 at Huehns Funeral Home, 1414 Michigan Street, Sturgeon Bay, WI 54235 with Pastor Bob Stewart officiating. Justin will be laid to rest in Saints Peter and Paul Cemetery in Institute, right next to the school he taught at and the football field he coached on. Visitation for family and friends will be held at the funeral home on Sunday, November 8, 2026 from 2:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. and will continue on Monday from 9:30 a.m. until 11:15 a.m. Memorials may be given in his honor for the Heritage Village at Big Creek (located at 2041 Michigan Street, Sturgeon Bay, WI 54235), a place that Justin loved, and those memorials should be made payable to the Door County Historical Society (P.O. Box 71, Sturgeon Bay, WI 54235; www.doorcountyhistoricalsociety.org). Expressions of sympathy, memories, and photos of Justin may be shared with his family through his tribute page at www.HuehnsFuneralHome.com.
