Southern Door linebacker and running back Derik LeCaptain announced Monday his intentions to play for the Minnesota Golden Gophers football team next fall. LeCaptain will join the Golden Gophers as a preferred walk-on, giving him an opportunity to earn a scholarship later in his collegiate career. In his senior season, LeCaptain earned co-offensive and defensive player of the year honors in the MONLPC-Large Conference. According to Rivals.com, LeCaptain had also received offers from East Central University, Minnesota State-Mankato, Minnesota-Duluth, South Dakota, and Minnesota State. Wisconsin also offered him a preferred walk-on spot.
