Athletic Director position often comes with more challenges than expected

By Connor Harbit

A couple of newer Door County athletic directors have said that the job is not nearly as simple as others sometimes think. There is a lot more that goes into the job than simply scheduling games and corresponding with parents. Korey Mallien, the activities director at Southern Door County School District, was a former sports editor who took on the job just before the 2018 school year. He said there are a lot of jobs that need to be done that usually go unnoticed by the public.

With so much to be done by one person, it can be a little overwhelming for those just stepping into the job. Todd Meikle, the athletics director at Sturgeon Bay, just recently filled the position earlier this year. He said that after serving in the role, he has a greater appreciation for those who have come before him.

Meikle also mentioned that another challenge athletic directors face is remaining within the guidelines of the Wisconsin Interscholastic Activities Association, the governing body for all Wisconsin school activities and athletics.
