A Southern Door High School football player is the latest local Division I athlete. Derik LeCaptain just finished his senior season at Southern Door by rushing for over 2,100 yards and 23 touchdowns. He also had 109 total tackles, 4 forced fumbles, and 4 interceptions. His defensive prowess has led him to be a preferred walk-on for the University of Minnesota football team starting next season where he will be playing linebacker. LeCaptain says he has always appreciated the support that he's gotten from the community.
LeCaptain said he chose Minnesota over University of South Dakota and University of Wisconsin. There was something about Minnesota that him feel most comfortable there.
LeCaptain is also a starter on Southern Door's record-breaking basketball team where he averages almost 17 points per game.
