Sturgeon Bay recognized for excellent sportsmanship

The Sturgeon Bay girls basketball team has received a glowing mark of approval from a WIAA official. Stephen Sanders, who has had a 45-year career as a referee, was on the court during the Clippers' meeting with Green Bay West a couple weeks ago. Following the contest, Sanders wrote a letter of appreciation to the team. In the letter, Sanders praised the sportsmanship the team and the coaching philosophy of head coach Erik Tauschek, saying he "displayed teamwork, discipline, and selflessness." Sturgeon Bay High School Principal Bob Nickel said he's been pleased with the emphasis that his school's athletic programs have placed on sportsmanship this year.

The letter of appreciation comes at a very interesting time for Sturgeon Bay, as the rest of the state is struggling to find officials due to various amounts of disrespect encountered by those who help with high school contests. Earlier this month, the WIAA released an opinion piece telling overzealous parents to 'cool it' in an effort to stop the shortages.
