Derik Hawkey steps down as Southern Door boys basketball coach

Southern Door varsity boys basketball coach Derik Hawkey will not be back on the sidelines for the Eagles next season. The announcement comes after a 2018-2019 campaign that included the end of a 40 consecutive win streak within Packerland Conference. Hawkey led the Eagles to four of their five straight conference championships. Hawkey confirmed the news Wednesday but wanted to let the dust settle before conducting an on-air interview.

As a player, Derik Hawkey is one of the top three all-time scorers. His pupil Kyle Daoust passed him on the all-time list in the postseason last month. Hawkey and Daoust each sit behind Nathan Vogel as the all-time leading scorer.

Parents and players have said what makes Derik such a great coach for Southern Door is that many of his players watched Hawkey star in Eagle Gymnasium when they were in elementary school. He related to the players in so many ways and all-time great Eagles like Daoust, Derik LeCaptain, Nick LeCaptain and Mitchell Gerend have all praised coach Hawkey in past interviews on DoorCountyDailyNews.com. Former Eagles coaches like Ben Rikkola and Josh Rankin have also said tremendous things about Hawkey as well.

The Eagles will certainly miss having Derik Hawkey on the sidelines next year.
