Hill Raceway Report: Rick LeMieux turns back the clock to take top honors in the Sport Mods

With the help of every driver in the pits, fans were treated to a very fast and dust free race track for point night #3. There were 21 Street Stocks, 17 Sport Mods, 17 Stock Cars and 7 Bombers on hand to do battle. Our next night of racing will be on Saturday, July 20th. The night will feature the Busch Shootout for the Stock Cars and former NASCAR star, David Reutimann will return to the driver's seat at the Hill.

Sturgeon Bay’s “Rock N’ Roll” Rick LeMieux jumped from his outside front row starting spot to take the lead of the Sport Mod feature.  LeMieux built a huge lead as defending champ Tom Stark and Mike Plate battled for second. A caution with 9 laps remaining erased that advantage. As the race resumed Stark applied heavy pressure down low, pulling even with the leader several times. LeMieux worked the top groove keeping enough momentum to hold on to the lead. Despite the pressure LeMieux never slipped, earning his first ever feature win in the Sport Mods to the delight of the home crowd. It was LeMieux’s first win since May of 1999. Stark ran a great race but had to settle for second at the pay window, Dennis Miesler was third, Jarred VanLaanen took fourth and Cody Rass completed the top five.

In Stock Car action Jeff Lautenbach slipped by Aidan Gretz to secure the early lead as Brett Wenzel and Scott Boulanger gave chase. Wenzel worked to the back bumper of Lautenbach and was able to slip by midway through the contest. Wenzel never looked back to score his first win of the season. Boulanger and Lautenbach had their best runs of the season to place second and third respectively. Point leader Larry Karcz Jr had his engine expire coming to the checkers and coasted across the line to place fourth. Tom Brumlic rounded out the top five.

Defending Street Stock champ Dave “The Hammer” DeGrave led every lap en route to his first feature win of the season. Title contender Chase Solomon suffered a broken tie-rod on lap 5, causing him to not finish. With a second-place finish Dan Van Pay took over the point lead. Roger LaViolette was third, Jeff Krauel had a season best finish of fourth and Amber Delsart had her best night as well to place fifth.  DeGrave also scored the win in the Busch Shootout.

Scott Schlafke led every lap of the Bomber feature for his first win of the season.
