K/D Salmon Tournament Update: Eight top 30 pounds

The storms and the fog could not stop anglers from catching eight fish eclipsing the 30-pound barrier during the opening weekend of the Kewaunee/Door Salmon Tournament.

A minimum of 166 chinooks larger than 20 pounds were brought in, including 50 that were heavier than 25 pounds.

Eight 30-pound-plus chinooks were brought to official scales, including a 32.92 with no ticket opening morning. That left seven that counted, and two of them came in Sunday, a 31.98 for Wesley Hansen of Green Bay at Baileys Harbor (caught Saturday night, weighed Sunday morning; shown), and a 31.51 for Austin Novak at Washington Island (shown in the group pic earlier).

Winds began to pick up from the north late Sunday, and were expected to stay north Monday before switching northwest, then west, through Thursday. As of this writing, a strong southwest/south blow is expected Friday and Saturday. If you've got some vacation days coming, Tuesday to Thursday might be the right time to use 'em!
