Berkley named new Sevastopol baseball coach

Sevastopol went just south of its district lines to grab its next head baseball coach.

In a message sent to Sturgeon Bay baseball players sent on Saturday, Kent Berkley told his former team that he had accepted the head baseball coach position at Sevastopol. Under the tutelage of head baseball coach John Berns, Berkley served as a hitting coach for the Clippers. Sturgeon Bay had two Packerland championships and a number of all-conference players during Berkley's short time with the program.

Berkley could not be reached via phone, but you can read the full message he sent to players, families, and supporters below.

"Having already written a note of gratitude to Coach Berns, Coach Andre and AD Meikle, this note is directed to the student-athletes and parents of Sturgeon Bay High School. I have accepted the position of Head Baseball Coach at Sevastopol High School for the 2020 season. I want to express how much I enjoyed working with each of you in the SBHS baseball program. Having the opportunity to teach the greatest game ever conceived to so many fine young men these past two seasons has been a great joy and gift for me. I tip my cap to the parents for nurturing and developing this group of young men who exhibited good character and spirit. Although I have been coaching baseball for decades, I make it a goal to continue learning new approaches for teaching the game. Good coaches steal from each other and I have learned valuable lessons from Coaches Berns and Andre. I have also learned a great deal from each player. I am always trying to find the best way to frame and communicate teaching points and the feedback you players provided has been extremely helpful in making me a better coach. Thank you -- I will miss working with you and seeing you on a regular basis. My parting advice to each player is to take advantage of every learning opportunity that presents itself to you. Remember that the time to prepare isn’t after you have been given the opportunity, it is long before the opportunity arises. So, work hard this off season and report to baseball practice ready to go. Listen carefully to Coach Berns and Coach Andre. They know the game and have proven track records of success. You also have a returning team captain in Jake Schneider who is an exemplary player, leader and competitor. The program is in good hands. My desire to work again as a head coach in no way diminishes how fond I am of SBHS. It has been a great place to work and a great place to send my son for an education. Luckily, we live in a small community and I will have the pleasure of seeing you all at school events and at other happenings in the community. In addition, Coach Berns and I plan to stay in touch regularly and to collaborate on some joint events to promote baseball in the community so I will likely see you in those venues also. Best to you all. Coach Kent Berkley"
