Algoma football gears up for Newman Catholic

Head Coach Wade Vandervest believes Newman Catholic could pose the greatest challenge for Algoma this season. The Wolves are 2-0 in 2019 and have outscored their opponents by a combined 80-6. In the first three quarters of their week two matchup at Sevastopol, the Algoma defense allowed just a single first down. Sevastopol quickly tried to go to the air to move the ball. Algoma handled it with general ease but Vandervest isn't ready to say that the Wolves will react as well to Newman's air raid offense. Their quarterback, Ben Tate, is completing 73 percent of his passes this year with eight touchdowns and zero interceptions.

Algoma plans to counterattack the Fighting Cardinals with a creative wildcat style offense. Vandervest says Algoma developed the offense specifically for the eight-man game.

Those two athletes are Carter Zimmerman and Oliver Robertson. Robertson was injured on special teams in the second half last week. If he is unable to go Friday night, look for wingback Brett Benesh to pick up some of the slack. Benesh has 6 rushing attempts on the year for 167 yards, a 28 yard average per carry. Kick off is at 7 PM Friday night at Algoma High School.
