While the focus locally has been on high school sports, some former area athletes are shining bright in the college ranks in the fall season's opening weeks.
-Concordia St. Paul linebacker Dalton Smerchek (Luxemburg-Casco) earned conference defensive player of the week honors. His efforts helped the Bears win their season opener 41-17 over Sioux Falls.

-Carroll University cross country Alli Spitzer (Algoma) scored points for her team in their first meet of the season in Green Bay with a time of 20:31. The effort helped Carroll capture first place in the Tom Barry Invitational hosted by St. Norbert College.
