Area athlete collegiate showcase: Week 1

While the focus locally has been on high school sports, some former area athletes are shining bright in the college ranks in the fall season's opening weeks.

-Concordia St. Paul linebacker Dalton Smerchek (Luxemburg-Casco) earned conference defensive player of the week honors. His efforts helped the Bears win their season opener 41-17 over Sioux Falls.

-Carroll University cross country Alli Spitzer (Algoma) scored points for her team in their first meet of the season in Green Bay with a time of 20:31. The effort helped Carroll capture first place in the Tom Barry Invitational hosted by St. Norbert College.

Once a week we will highlight former area athletes doing incredible things at the college level. Please email us at news@doorcountydailynews.com and we will include it in this series.
