The Clippers football squad fell Friday evening in Park Falls to Chequamegon High School 38-8. Although the final score looks lopsided, the game was far more competitive than Sturgeon Bay’s contest with Oakfield a week ago. The Clippers had just one penalty for the game, a holding call late in the fourth quarter. Last week they suffered multiple delay of game infractions, false starts, and personal fouls.
On a wet, sloppy field with rain coming down ball security remained an issue. Sturgeon Bay had a handful of bad and mishandled snaps. Quarterback Anthony Jennerjohn was intercepted three times by the Screaming Eagles’ Joseph Newbury. The turnovers proved too much for Sturgeon Bay who kept it close for much of the first half. The game was scoreless after one quarter and 16-0 at halftime. Chequamegon quarterback Michael Kirch joined Andrew Wells and Jacob Mertig to pace the Screaming Eagles rushing attack. Kirch kept his own number on an option running right to give Chequamegon its second score with under one minute to go in the first half.
Sturgeon Bay was able to move the football but was held off the board in the game’s first 24 minutes. Their best scoring opportunity of the first half came on a drive that began at their own 17. It ended abruptly after a Jennerjohn fumble on a designed run inside the opponent’s 30-yard line. A long pass play to receiver Drew Price set up the Clippers score in the fourth quarter. Price caught a crossing route and stayed on his feet down the left sideline to the Chequamegon 5 yard line. Sturgeon Bay plays in one week against Wisconsin Heights.
