Sevastopol drops homecoming game on 104.1 WRLU

The Sevastopol football team played hard in front of a big homecoming crowd on Friday night against Wabeno-Laona but couldn't come up with a victory in the final game of the season. The Rebels knocked off Sevastopol 54-14 ending the Pioneers state title defense. Sevastopol's defense had a hard time stopping the dynamic running duo of Ethan Westimayer and Connor Taylor for Wabeno/Laona. They both scored four touchdowns with two of Taylor's coming on kickoff returns.

The Pioneers had a couple of big plays of their own on offense. Logan Beyer caught a 67 yard touchdown pass from Jack DeYoung who was in the game replacing the injured Triston Beauchamp. Spencer Evenson had a 35 yard touchdown run in the second half. He finished with 25 carries for 142 yards and reached the 1,000 yard mark on the season.

Sevastopol emptied the playbook for the final game of the season and they all ended in interceptions. A flea flicker in the first half was picked off. Both of Spencer Evenson's passes were intercepted in the game including a jump pass attempt down near the goal line.

Sevastopol only lined up with three seniors on the squad this season and they were all honored at halftime along with other accomplished Sevastopol senior athletes. Only one of those three suited up in the final game and that was Arthur Hocevar. Triston Beauchamp and Caden Kacmarynski were both out with injuries.

Sevastopol Head Coach Ron Frank said in the postgame show on 104.1 WRLU that he expected his team to have growing pains this season after losing so much off of last year's state championship team. But with the Pioneers only losing three players off the team, the 2020 campaign could be a strong one.
