Three area teams take court Saturday

Three Door Peninsula high school volleyball teams are still alive for Saturday night action in the WIAA postseason tournament. The highest seed, and the only home team, is Luxemburg-Casco. The (1) Spartans had a bye in the first round Tuesday. If there was any rust it didn't show against Oconto Falls. L-C won in straight sets Thursday night 25-15, 25-13, 25-14. Saturday they play (4) Freedom. Both teams are out of the North Eastern Conference so they have played each other this season. L-C took that matchup in Freedom in straight sets. Freedom knocked out Sturgeon Bay in the second round in a match that could have gone either way. The Clippers won the first set 25-21 and were within mere points of taking the second, 25-27. Once the momentum swung, the Irish rolled in sets three and four.

Southern Door, fresh off their first shared Packerland conference championship in school history, are looking for some postseason hardware in Division 3. The Eagles are a four seed and travel Saturday to face Howard's Grove. The Eagles won a hard-fought match Thursday against St. Mary's Springs, 18-25, 25-20, 19-25, 27-25, 15-10. Howard's Grove has won both its tournament matches in straight sets, knocking out Algoma, 25-14, 25-15, 25-10, in the second round.

In Division 4, Gibraltar has rolled so far but the (2) Vikings must travel for Saturday's match to Hustisford. Gibraltar has won in straight sets the first two rounds. Given that the Vikings face almost exclusively Division 2 and Division 3 competition in the regular season, they are battle tested. That has proven advantageous in the Division 4 tournament in the early rounds.
