Phoenix men fall, women rise in season debut

Green Bay Phoenix basketball teams split their Wednesday night matchups during the opening week of the college basketball season.

The Phoenix men dropped their game at #23 Purdue 79-57. Three players scored in double figures for the Phoenix, led by Kameron Hankerson's 14 points. The Phoenix was able to get their deficit to under double figures in the second half, but were ultimately outgunned and undersized against the Boilermakers, a 2019 NCAA Tournament Elite Eight participant. Jahaad Proctor led the way for the Boilermakers. They return home this Saturday to face UW-Stout at 6 p.m. at the Kress Events Center.

The Phoenix women needed two overtimes to dispatch Central Michigan 111-105 on the road.  Down by as many as 14 points, the Phoenix clawed back to outscore the host Chippewas 22-13 in the third quarter. After playing an even first overtime, the Phoenix outscored the Chippewas to 11-5 in the final stanza to get the win. Karly Murphy scored 30 points in the season opener while Algoma's Anna Dier made several big baskets in the overtime periods on her way to a 10-point night. The Phoenix also return home to the Kress Events Center Saturday for a 1 p.m. tilt against South Dakota.
