Kings of the pitch

The Sturgeon Bay High School boys soccer team won the Division 4 State Championship Saturday afternoon at the Kohler Engines Stadium located within the Uihlein Soccer Park in Milwaukee. The Clippers scored in the second overtime period to defeat The Prairie School, 2-1. Overtime in soccer is not sudden death so Sturgeon Bay had to hold on for another two minutes after the go-ahead goal to secure their second State Title in school history.

The Prairie School took the lead in the 28th minute thanks to a goal from Max Yde, his 19th of the season. Nicholas Hawkins got the assist thanks to a superb near-side cross that Yde was able to head in past Clipper goalie Joe Wind.

Sturgeon Bay's Eli Dietzel answered in the 41st minute. Dietzel was kept in check by the Hawks for the most part. He had just one shot the entire game but he made it count to get his 32nd tally of the season. Dietzel's goal came off of a corner kick situation.

Late in the second half Nicholas Hawkins was shown the gate after a red card. The Hawks were put in a tough situation playing one man down into overtime. Sturgeon Bay bided their time until Carson Dvorak finally put one home in the 108th minute to notch the Clippers the golden ball.
