UWGB women advance at Victoria Invitational

The University of Wisconsin - Green Bay women's basketball team is participating in a holiday tournament in British Columbia, Canada. Victoria is south of Vancouver and west of Seattle at the mouth of the Puget Sound. Thursday was the first round and the Phoenix faced Bowling Green who entered the game 3-1 on the year. 


UWGB jumped out to an early lead, up 19-11 after one quarter. They treaded water for the next two quarters before pulling away late to secure a 73-54 victory. Green Bay played excellent defense with BGSU unable to reach 15 points in three separate quarters. The Falcons managed only 36 percent from the field. 


Guard Frankie Wurtz was a star for UWGB netting 24 points on 10-19 shooting to go with 12 rebounds and three steals. The Greater Victoria Invitational runs a double bracket. The first round had four games with eight teams on the court. The four losers still compete for 5th-8th place today and tomorrow while the four winners vie for 4th-1st. The winner's bracket has later start times the next two nights. UWGB plays at 7 PM against 10th-ranked Mississippi State. The Phoenix will look for another upset of an SEC opponent.
