WIAA makes football, soccer rule changes

A recent meeting of the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association (WIAA) yielded some new changes for local coaches to be aware of for the upcoming season.

For football, playoff teams will be seeded electronically in 2020 with the WIAA not allowing coaches to appeal their placement. Teams will also be mandated to play at least seven conference games or six conference games and an approved crossover game to be eligible for the playoffs.

For soccer, red cards will be counted as two yellow cards when it comes to a team's limit of 24 for the regular season. If a team accumulates more than 24 yellow cards in the season, they will not be eligible for tournament play.

In total, the WIAA approved 23 different rule changes for fall sports at its recent meeting in Stevens Point, affecting football, soccer, cross country, and girls golf in 2020.
