Packerland co-champs see different postseason results

Southern Door and Kewaunee High Schools ended up co-champions of the Packerland boys’ basketball conference after a hard-fought regular season finale last week. The Eagles took that game, and their good fortune continued into the postseason. Cedar Grove-Belgium was looking for an upset in Brussels Friday night, but Southern Door grounded the Rockets in the first half, holding them to 16 points. Southern Door’s defense was almost as good in the second stanza, as they cruised to a 55-36 win. It was Cedar Grove-Belgium’s lowest offensive output of the season. They had scored at least 70 points in six straight games entering Friday’s contest. If defense wins championships, the Eagles are on their way to a deep playoff run.

Ryan Claflin led Southern Door with 20 points. Alex Daoust chipped in 11, and Nick Baudhuin added nine points for the Eagles. Southern Door plays at Kohler Saturday at 4:00 PM. Kohler struggled against Howards Grove, sliding by 58-56.

Kewaunee was not as lucky on Friday night. The Storm lost to Kiel, 75-59. It was the second loss of the year to the Raiders. In nonconference play early in the regular season, Kewaunee dropped a home contest against Kiel by two points. Kewaunee ends their season at 18-5. Kiel will advance to Saturday’s regional final against Sheboygan Falls.
