Phoenix split Horizon League semifinal games

The Green Bay Phoenix basketball teams came up one half away from deja vu at the Horizon League Tournament.

Both teams played Northern Kentucky at the Indiana Farmers Coliseum in the Horizon League semifinals, but only the Phoenix women will move onto the championship game.

In Tuesday matinee, Frankie Wurtz was a big reason why the Phoenix held onto a 28-19 halftime lead for the 50-49 victory. Wurtz scored 17 points, including the game-winner with just over three seconds remaining to keep the season alive. They play IUPUI at 11 a.m. Tuesday for a chance at their fifth NCAA tournament appearance in six seasons.

The Phoenix men were not so lucky in their matchup, seeing a five-point lead disappear en route to an 80-69 loss to the Norse. Amari Davis reached a milestone for freshman scoring with 518 points, passing Phoenix legend Tony Bennett. It was not enough as an 11-4 run by the Norse and clutch free-throw shooting down the stretch buried their hopes for their first championship game appearance in the tournament since 2015. The Phoenix men will wait to see if they are invited to a postseason tournament like last year when they reached the CIT Final.
