Churchill Downs announced earlier this week that the first leg of the famed Triple Crown in horse racing will not get out of the gates until September. The traditional race date is the first Saturday in May, with the Preakness Stakes in Maryland taking place two weeks later. That race has not announced a changed date yet, but their website says succinctly, “Details coming soon.”
The Kentucky Derby has a strong Wisconsin connection with Hall of Fame trainer D. Wayne Lukas, a graduate of UW-Madison and native of Antigo. Lukas has trained four Derby winners but does not have any serious contenders in 2020.
