Buhr still leads K/D Salmon Tournament field after weekend

Despite some challenging weather events opening weekend of the 38th annual Kewaunee/Door County Salmon Tournament, 75 chinooks in excess of 20 pounds were brought to official tournament scales.

A pair of 26-pounders were the heaviest weighed Sunday, a 26.32 for Kelly Dequaine (fishing with Door County charter captain Andy Stuth) at Baileys 57 and a 26.30 for Kristopher Smith of Stevens Point at Algoma BP. Dequaine said she wanted to show "girl power" so she caught the biggest fish on the boat. Way to go Kelly!

Light winds are in the forecast for Monday, and anglers will try to unlock the secrets of cold-water "kings" after a 1-2 punch of a strong southeast blow Saturday followed by powerful west winds Sunday rolled the lake and scattered fish. Salmon could be anywhere from near shore to very deep water, but one thing is for sure: the field is even for all, and those who put in their time and cover a lot of water may be rewarded with a savage strike from a mature chinook!
