Kewaunee fish take over K/D tournament leaderboard

Two new names moved into the Top 10 Wednesday, Day 6 in the 38th annual Kewaunee/Door County Salmon Tournament. (We’re missing one of the nightly reports, so can’t officially update our leaderboard until sometime Thursday).

The biggest news Wednesday was a true fish tale out of Kewaunee: a 39-1/2-inch, 31.35-pound chinook caught by Jesse Picard of Little Suamico. He was out with his girlfriend, Maddie Jorgenson of Green Bay, when the monster smacked a spoon set about 25 feet down in 120 feet of water around 7 a.m.

About 13 hours later, Gloria Cloutier of Fairbould, Minn., won a battle with a 38-1/2-inch, 28.84-pounder that hit a flasher/fly set about halfway down in 104 feet of water at Algoma. With six others aboard, it was a wild ride back to port; the crew arrived at the weigh station with just minutes to spare.

The top 100 salmon are now all larger than 23 pounds.

Northeast winds Thursday could make it a bit sporty early, but a north breeze of 5-10 knots is expected by evening before switching to the south 5 to 10 Friday. South winds are expected again Saturday as heat and humidity builds away from the lake.

The tournament ends at 9 p.m. Saturday, and tickets are still available. All anglers aboard the boat (age 10 and up) must have tickets. They're available — $25 for the remainder of the tournament or $13 for a daily chance — at the K/D's five official weigh-in locations: Accurate Marine & Tackle in Kewaunee, Algoma BP, Howie's Tackle & Archery in Sturgeon Bay, Baileys 57 in Baileys Harbor and B&K Bait and Tackle @ Kap's Marina on Washington Island. Tickets are also available 24/7 at JP Express in Algoma and JP Express on Hwy. 42 just north of Carlsville. Greystone Castle in Sturgeon Bay and Center Court Convenience in Kewaunee are additional ticket-only outlets.
