Bortolini's catch hangs on for first in K/D Salmon Tournament

Angelo Bortolini of Kewaunee is the unofficial winner of the 2020 Kewaunee/Door County Salmon Tournament with a 41-1/2-inch, 32.78-pound chinook he reeled in with friend Harold Shaw off their home port of Kewaunee early Tuesday, July 21.

If everything checks out — and there's been no reason to believe there's anything "fishy" with this catch — Bortolini will get a call Monday night after the K/D Committee meets with the official word that he's the 2020 winner of the top prize. It is valued at more than $11,000, including $10,000 cash, a free mount of his trophy by Twin Rivers Taxidermy, and a custom-made, sterling silver salmon ring with a black diamond eye by Paul Spanbauer of Wisconsin Charm.

Todd Smith of Brussels is in the No. 2 spot with a 31.58-pounder he caught early in the evening on Thursday, July 23, off Algoma. Second place earns a $6,000 check and a Howie's Tackle & Archery prize package.

Jesse Picard of Little Suamico is in the third spot with a 31.35-pounder caught early Wednesday, July 22, off Kewaunee while fishing with his girlfriend, Maddie Jorgenson of Green Bay. Third place is a $4,000 check.

The final payout will be based on the number of daily and full tournament tickets sold at 10 locations. Anecdotally, at least, sales appear to be strong enough to challenge the record of 3,049 participants in 2016.

Final, official results will be posted late Monday night on the K/D Salmon Tournament page.

The 39th annual event is scheduled for July 23-31, 2021. A decision on the 2022 dates will be made at Monday's meeting.
