Coaches and athletes across Division I college sports began using the social media tag #WeWantToPlay a week ago when it became clear that the Big Ten and Pac 12 were moving towards the cancellation of the upcoming sports season. Ohio State Buckeye Justin Fields has kept the pressure on the conference over the past weekend, starting an online petition that has garnered over a quarter million signatures as of Tuesday.
The Big Ten has still not made it publicly known which presidents voted to end fall play. Penn State Athletic Director Sandy Barbour says she wasn’t sure if a formal roll call even happened. No one wants to go on record for the position while players and coaches from several of the conference’s largest programs continue to speak out. The Big 12 and SEC have announced ten-game conference schedules since last Tuesday, and schools like Nebraska and Iowa are threatening to leave. The final story on the Big Ten’s fall season has most likely not been written yet.
