The Sevastopol football team lost its season opener 76-22 at home against Auburndale on Saturday. This was the first meeting between the two as it’s Auburndale’s first season playing 8-man. The Pioneers got off to a rough start as the Apaches jumped out to a quick 24-0 lead. Sevastopol was able to methodically go down the field and cut the lead to 24-8. The Apaches would answer back instantly and took that momentum to a 48-16 lead at the half. The run continued in the second half as Auburndale scored on their first three possessions with each drive only taking two plays. Sevastopol had a few explosive plays of their own including a Spencer Evenson 72-yard touchdown run and a Logan Beyer 20-yard touchdown reception on 4th and 11. In the end, Auburndale’s ground attack was too much for Sevastopol as they gave up 400+ rushing yards in the 76-22 defeat. The two will meet again on October 10.
Sevastopol will travel to Algoma to take on the Wolves on Friday at 7:00 pm.
