Spartans tested, but prevail in volleyball championship

The Luxemburg-Casco volleyball faced their toughest test of the season on Tuesday night but still walked off the court as the newly crowned NEC champions.

The Spartans won the match 25-14, 25-23, 26-24. The team went 28 straight sets without giving up more than 20 points. Defense was key in the match with Kenzie Hanson (23), Grace Holschuh (10), Jillian Lynts (18) and Emma Johnson (14) all registering double-digit dig totals. Johnson had 38 assists on the evening while Holschuh led all Spartans with 10 kills. Kennedy Schmitz had 37 digs and Sam Kempinger scored on 12 kills for the Foxes.

The first set was even until L-C pulled away midway through. Fox Valley Lutheran pushed back to start set two, building a 13-7 lead before the Spartans roared back. Luxemburg-Casco was able to win three of the last four points for the 25-23 edge. The third set was defined by runs. Just when it looked like one side or the other was set to pull away, the score tightened again. L-C squeaked out a two-point win.

The Spartans will have a few days off before they play in the regional championship against a to-be-determined opponent. The match will be carried on the NEW Radio Sports Network.
