Gophers trounce Phoenix in opener

The Green Bay Phoenix gave up a pair of big runs in their opening contest of the season, losing to the Minnesota Gophers 99-69.

The Phoenix found themselves in a hole early with the Gophers opening the game with a 12-0 run. The Gophers would put even more distance between the two squads with a 24-11 before entering the break with a 53-22 lead. The Phoenix would come back in the second half, getting the deficit down to just 10 points about halfway through the second half. A 25-9 run by the Gophers eventually buried the Phoenix, climbing back to an earlier held 30 point lead. Amari Phoenix led all Phoenix players with 17 points and four rebounds followed by Josh Jefferson's 14 points and 4 rebounds.

It does not get easier for the Phoenix their next time out as they travel to Madison on Tuesday to take on the #7 Wisconsin Badgers at 4 p.m.
